The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has responded sharply to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of Nigeria’s recent elections. Obasanjo described the 2023 general elections as a “travesty” at the Chinua Achebe leadership forum held at Yale University ¹. However, the Ohanaeze youths countered that Obasanjo’s own presidency was marred by electoral irregularities and malpractices.
Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, accused Obasanjo of institutionalizing corruption and promoting a flawed electoral system during his tenure ². Okwu questioned Obasanjo’s moral grounds to lecture on leadership, given his alleged involvement in electoral malpractices.
Obasanjo had emphasized the need for thoroughly vetted INEC leaders with impeccable reputations and short tenures. He also criticized the 2023 election, citing the BVAS and IReV technologies’ potential to enhance accuracy and transparency.
The Ohanaeze youths’ statement concluded that Obasanjo’s past actions undermine his credibility, and his criticism should not be taken seriously.
