A Kaduna-based development monitoring group, the Forum for Good Governance (FFGG), has thrown its weight behind the arrest of Mohammed Bashir Sa’idu, the former Commissioner of Finance and Local Government under Governor Nasir Elrufai’s administration. Sa’idu’s arrest was made following a petition accusing him of laundering N3.96 billion and misappropriating N244 million between 2015 and 2023.
The group’s statement, signed by Hon. Ahmadu Ibrahim Kauru, emphasized that the arrest was justified, given the gravity of the allegations. They warned against any interference from Elrufai, citing his history of disregarding the rule of law during his tenure as governor. The group recalled how Elrufai had arrested and detained journalists, including Luka Binniyat, Jacob Dickson, Stephen Kefas, and Gabriel Idibia, without facing any challenges.
The FFGG stressed that the recovery of looted funds is crucial, especially considering Kaduna state’s significant debt. They insisted that Sa’idu’s arrest should not be politicized, as it is a legitimate response to allegations of financial crimes.
The allegations against Sa’idu include misappropriating funds, selling $45 million in state-owned foreign currency at an undervalued exchange rate, and failing to account for proceeds from the sale of government houses in Marafa Estate, Kaduna. The Kaduna State House of Assembly had previously investigated Sa’idu’s financial dealings and forwarded its findings to anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC.
The police have confirmed that Sa’idu’s arrest was not politically motivated but rather a response to credible allegations of financial crimes. He will remain in detention as investigations continue.
The FFGG commended the police for taking action, stating that it is a step in the right direction towards recovering looted funds and ensuring accountability in governance. They urged the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and to bring Sa’idu to justice if found guilty.
The group also called on the Kaduna state government to take immediate action to recover the allegedly looted funds and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. They emphasized that the recovery of looted funds is essential for the development of the state and the well-being of its citizens.
In conclusion, the FFGG reiterated its commitment to promoting good governance and accountability in Kaduna state. They vowed to continue monitoring the situation and to ensure that justice is served.
